I've been thinking of this for a long time now, to have a finite world that doesn't just end with an invisible wall. Think of a circle, and a character walking around that circle but keeping his feet facing the center of the circle, we could do this in Minecraft maybe by teleporting the player when he gets to the, for example, top right edge of the circle to another point and then changing the gravitational direction. It would work if you had a center of gravity, so instead of having the core be the Nether, have the Nether be the equivalent to Mars then just fill the core with Lava or a new liquid, Molten Iron. which would be (insert favorite adjective)! but given that it remains the same, and lava is still there, it all works quite nicely. because then, with the above proposition, you would fall from the sky when you dug as deep as you can go. The true problem arises if you were to get rid of the bedrock/lava. think of playing Pacman from Pacman's perspective, and you will realize that his world is spherical too, because when he goes off the edge of the screen, he apears on the other side.

therefore the resulting "looped" world would, for all intents and purposes, be spherical. as for the poles, there arent any, given that Earth only has poles because it rotates, and minecraft doesnt rotate. so every time you get to the "edge" you arrive at the other side. when you get as far east as you can go, you see what is as far west as you can go. How would the sperical world work, geometrically? A Minecraft world is a simple Euclidian grid of cubes, so how would they be made to wrap together like a sphere for the purpose of the map? Like, what would happen at the north and south poles?
